Martin Miller's Gin: The Perfect Symbiosis of English Distillation and Icelandic Purity
The Martin Miller's Gin is a modern classic that revolutionized the entire gin world upon its release in 1999. Born from the vision of its eccentric namesake to create the "perfect spirit," this gin breaks geographical boundaries. It is the result of an obsessive quest for quality, culminating in a spectacular journey: distilled in the heart of England, the distillate travels over 3,000 miles to Iceland, where it is blended with the purest spring water in the world.
As a Distilled Gin, it embodies a balance that can only be achieved through radical separation and subsequent re-unification. It foregoes the often-common overload of exotic ingredients today, focusing instead on perfecting the classic gin DNA.
Sensory & Flavor Profile – Crystalline Clarity
Color: A Promise of Purity
Visually, Martin Miller's Gin presents itself as absolutely crystal clear and with a brilliance that almost resembles liquid diamonds. In the bottle as well as in the glass, it shows excellent light refraction, a direct result of the filtration and the extreme purity of the Icelandic water used.
Nose (Nosing): The Freshness of the North
The first nosing reveals a wonderfully balanced juniper note, which, however, does not appear dominant at all. Immediately following is a wave of bright, zesty citrus – one thinks of freshly grated lemon and lime zest. In the background, a subtle, almost ethereal florality resonates, reminiscent of violets and freshly cut grass, combined with an earthy spice of coriander and licorice.
Mouthfeel: Silky Texture
The outstanding characteristic on the palate is the mouthfeel. Despite the classic 40 % vol, the gin feels exceptionally soft and silky. There is no alcoholic sharpness; instead, it gently coats the mouth, which is attributable to the high quality of the base alcohol and the unique water source.
Taste (Palate): Classic Meets Modern
On the palate, a harmonious layering unfolds: juniper forms the solid foundation, while the citrus notes provide constant freshness. This is followed by a gentle warmth of cinnamon cassia and nutmeg, which gives the gin body. The texture remains creamy and round until the end.
Finish: Clean and Precise
The finish is medium-long and exceptionally clean. What remains is an elegant dryness, a hint of coriander spice, and a refreshing citrus reminiscence that lingers long without feeling heavy.
The Recipe – The Secret of Double Distillation
The Botanical List: Selection Over Excess
Martin Miller's relies on a carefully curated list of ten classic botanicals, including:
-
Juniper: The indispensable base.
-
Coriander & Angelica Root: For spice and fixation.
-
Cinnamon & Cassia Bark: For warmth and depth.
-
Florentine Iris (Orris): For the floral structure.
-
Lemon and Bitter Orange Peel: The source of freshness.
The Special Feature: Separate Distillation
Unlike many other gins, the botanicals in Martin Miller's are distilled in two separate batches. The earthy and spicy ingredients are processed in the first batch, while only the citrus fruits are processed in the second. This prevents the volatile, bright citrus aromas from being suppressed by the heavy, earthy notes. Only after distillation are the two distillates blended in the perfect ratio.
Distillation & Craft – England Meets Iceland
Process: The Legendary "Angela"
Martin Miller's is distilled in a more than 100-year-old copper pot still named "Angela" at the renowned Langley Distillery in the English West Midlands. Here, the highly concentrated heart of the gin is obtained using the classic pot-still method.
The Journey to Iceland
However, what is special about Martin Miller's is the blending. Since Martin Miller believed that English tap water (even after demineralization) would negatively affect the gin's character, he sent the distillate to Iceland. There it is blended with Icelandic spring water that has been naturally filtered through volcanic rock. This water is so pure that it requires no artificial treatment and gives the gin its legendary smoothness.
Small Batch Philosophy
Although Martin Miller's is now valued worldwide, production continues in manageable batches to ensure the aromatic consistency and quality of each individual bottle.
Reviews & Reputation
Martin Miller's Gin is one of the most awarded spirits of the last two decades and is cited as a reference for purity in every Premium Gin Test.
-
World Gin Awards: Regular awards as one of the best Contemporary Gins worldwide.
-
International Spirits Challenge (ISC): Multiple gold medal winner for design and content.
-
Falstaff Gin-Trophy: Consistently achieves high ratings in the range of 92-94 points (falstaff.com).
-
The Beverage Testing Institute: Awarded the gin the rare distinction of "Superlative" with 97 out of 100 points.
The Perfect Serve – Mixology & Enjoyment
Gin & Tonic
Due to its pronounced citrus notes, Martin Miller's harmonizes perfectly with a high-quality, but not overly complex tonic.
-
Tonic Water: A classic Indian Tonic Water (e.g., Thomas Henry or Fever-Tree).
-
Garnish: A classic citrus zest or – for a modern twist – a strawberry and a black peppercorn. The strawberry emphasizes the floral note, while the pepper tickles the juniper.
Cocktails
-
Martini: Due to its smoothness, it is the ideal gin for a bone-dry Dry Martini with a lemon zest.
-
Negroni: It gives the classic an unexpected freshness and elegance without being overpowered by the Campari.
Neat Enjoyment
Thanks to the Icelandic spring water, Martin Miller's is one of the few gins that can be enjoyed neat at room temperature or lightly chilled, to experience the purity of the distillation.
