2019 Cloudy Bay Te Wahi Pinot Noir - New Zealand

Cloudy Bay Te Wahi is the product of two contrasting vineyards in the exciting Central Otago region of New Zealand. The rocky Northburn growing area produces grapes of great structure and intensity, while the softer terrain of Calvert yields fragrant, opulent fruit. These complementary vineyards are the origin of a wonderfully balanced wine. Dark, intense, and elegant, combining concentrated tannins with an overt vibrancy, this wine is the expression of what defines the Pinot Noir of this region.

Taste:
The wine is dark and intense, with notes of boysenberry, flowers, and subtle spices on the nose. It also features notes of plum and bramble fruit, balanced by juicy freshness and fine tannins, as well as seductive aromas of dark chocolate and blackcurrant in a long finish. On the palate, the wine is dense, with rich flavors of plum and bramble fruit. These are balanced by a juicy freshness, which, in conjunction with the fine tannins, conveys a balanced and elegant impression. The finish is long, reminiscent of dark chocolate and blackcurrant.

Production:
A warm, unusually calm spring in Central Otago was followed by a vibrant summer, then cooler conditions and rain. The 2019 harvest was brought in early. The fruit was in excellent condition and was largely destemmed with 22% whole cluster added to open-top fermenters. After soaking and fermentation, the grapes matured for 12 months in French oak barriques.

Serving Suggestion:
Enjoy chilled at 14-16°C. Ideal with grilled meat, Serrano ham, olives, pasta, and paella.
