The distillery was founded in 1824 by George Smith as the first legal distillery after the "Act of Excise" of 1823. The water for the distillery, which belongs to the Speyside region, comes from Josie's Well, a natural spring that bubbles up from the dark soil of Glenlivet.

Do you know the original idea behind "Signatory Vintage"? Each of founder Andrew Symington's single cask bottlings was supposed to receive the signature of a prominent personality. Even before he found a worthy signatory, his first Single Cask Scotch Whisky – a Glenlivet 1968 – was already sold out. Symington then discarded the signature idea, but the brand name remained. His warehouse holds more than 10,000 casks – some from distilleries that no longer exist or that normally only produce whisky for blends. This also includes North British from Edinburgh. Single Grain bottlings from the Grain Distillery are extremely rare. One of these exclusive whiskies made it into our newsletter this week: After 28 years in a Refill Sherry Butt, the fruity spirit was bottled on March 4, 2020, into only 283 bottles.
