Barbanera Gigino 80 Anniversario 2022 – a monumental legacy from Tuscany

Gigino 80 Anniversario 2022 is a profound tribute to Luigi Barbanera, co-founder of the family estate, and this special edition marks the house's 80th anniversary. This wine is far more than a classic blend; it is the liquid expression of Tuscan passion and tradition. It shows an exceptional balance between power and elegance. At 14.5% vol., it is a full-bodied, extract-rich red that captures the soul of central Italy in every drop. Anyone looking to buy an outstanding Tuscan red that combines history and modernity will find an impressive benchmark in Gigino 80 Anniversario.

The philosophy: a tribute to the generations

Behind the Barbanera name is a family history that goes back to 1938. "Gigino" was created to honour Luigi Barbanera's vision – to make wines that impress with their approachability and, at the same time, their enormous depth. In accordance with EU Regulation 2021/2117, this wine offers full transparency about its quality and origin. It is the result of a strict selection of the estate's best lots of grapes and stands for an unmistakable, international taste profile that regularly earns top ratings from wine critics (such as Luca Maroni).

Sensory analysis

Tasting Gigino 80 Anniversario 2022 reveals a profile that impresses with its enormous concentration, velvety texture and complex bouquet.

Colour: in the glass the wine shows a deep, almost opaque purple-red with violet highlights that point to its vitality and rich extract.

Aromas (nose): the nose is dominated by a very intense and inviting bouquet:

Fruit: powerful notes of black cherries, blackberry jelly and ripe blueberries.

Spice & sweetness: seductive hints of vanilla, white chocolate and sweet tobacco.

Depth: a hint of Mediterranean scrub and subtle toasty aromas.

Structure & mouthfeel: on the palate the wine is wonderfully smooth and concentrated. The tannins are extremely finely polished and wrapped in an almost creamy texture.

Acidity & balance: despite its density, the wine has a harmonious freshness that supports the powerful body and makes it remarkably easy to drink.

Finish: phenomenally long and fruit-driven, ending on a fine balsamic note.

Origin & terroir

The grapes for Gigino grow on the gentle hills of Tuscany, one of the world's most renowned wine regions.

Soil structure and microclimate

The vineyards have a mix of loamy limestone soils and sandy layers. This terroir gives the grapes high aromatic intensity and a soft tannin structure. The sunny climate of central Italy ensures full phenolic ripeness, while cool nights preserve aromatic freshness.

Viticultural philosophy

Barbanera relies on a combination of traditional methods and modern cellar technology. Yields are strictly controlled in the vineyard to obtain only highly concentrated grapes. The focus is on bringing out the natural fruitiness of the varieties (often a blend of Sangiovese and international varieties) to perfection.

Vinification & ageing

The anniversary wine is made with the aim of maximum harmony.

Fermentation: alcoholic fermentation takes place under strict temperature control in stainless-steel tanks, to protect the primary fruit aromas.

Ageing: the wine matures for several months in selected oak barrels (barriques and tonneaux). This not only builds structure but also gives the wine its characteristic vanilla and chocolate notes without dominating the fruit.

Blending: the cellar master assembles the final blend only after a long resting period, to find the perfect balance for the "80 Anniversario" profile.

Food pairing & serving

Barbanera Gigino 80 Anniversario 2022 is an excellent companion for convivial evenings and festive food.

Suggested dishes: an ideal partner for bistecca alla fiorentina, braised wild boar ragù or hearty pasta dishes with truffles.

Cheese suggestion: aged pecorino or tangy Taleggio.

Serving temperature: best served at 16–18 °C.

Glassware: we recommend a large-bowled red-wine glass (Bordeaux or Syrah glass), so that the opulent fruit can open up fully.
