Condrieu is making a comeback, especially among dry white wines. More and more winemakers want to return to traditional methods where the grapes are harvested in an overripe state. Condrieu has been registered as an AOC since 1940, and recently, its sweet wines are well on their way to also receiving AOC registration.
Aroma and Taste:
Straw yellow to golden yellow, with brilliant green and golden reflections. On the nose, aromatic power thanks to the Viognier grape variety. In its youth, Condrieu shows a dominance of fresh fruit, reminiscent of apricot and peach. A floral touch, especially of violet, enhances the captivating bouquet. In fully ripened vintages, honey, toasted, and mineral notes can be detected. As the wine ages, the aromas of fresh fruit will give way to the scents of dried fruits.
Aging:
The 2020 Victor Bérard Cire Condrieu vintage was made from 100% Viognier. The grapes are hand-picked. After whole cluster pressing, the must rests for over 48 hours for cold settling. Fermentation takes place in barrels and vats at a low temperature for about 4 months. After that, the wine matures for another 9 months in French oak barrels.
