2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc - Château de Beaucastel - Rhône, France
Like its red counterpart, Coudoulet Blanc is no ordinary Côtes du Rhône: the white wine comes from Château de Beaucastel, one of the most important names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and is vinified by the Perrin family with the same care as their great Châteauneuf cuvées. With just 3 hectares under vine, Coudoulet Blanc is one of the appellation's rare white-wine sites, lying east of the Beaucastel vineyard between Orange and Avignon.
Terroir and vinification
The soil consists of Miocene marine molasse covered with alpine pebbles ("galets roulés") – the same geological foundation that shapes the red Beaucastel wines. The grapes are picked by hand, carefully sorted and collected in crates before being pneumatically pressed. Fermentation takes place partly in oak barrels and partly in stainless-steel tanks; the wine then matures for eight months on its lees before the final blending and bottling – deliberately without cold stabilisation, to preserve the wine's full finesse and balance.
The 2023 vintage
A mild winter followed by a dry spring and a hot summer shaped the season. Under bright sunshine the harvest moved quickly, to keep the grapes from oxidising in the heat; it ended on 4 October. First tastings show a balanced, concentrated yet fresh vintage with great potential.
Tasting note
Lovely gold with subtle green highlights. The nose reveals a refined, elegant bouquet of citrus fruit and rose blossom. Lovely tension and perfect balance on the palate – the citrus flavours continue, underpinned by a fine, salty-mineral bitterness on the finish.
Serving suggestion: Lightly chilled at 10 °C, in an elegant glass.
At the table: Seafood, grilled vegetables and creamy cheeses; also a very good companion to tomato salad and pan-fried fish with vegetables.
