Tullum is one of Italy's smallest DOCG appellations – and the only one in Abruzzo to hold this status for no fewer than three grape varieties.
The estate
Vigneti Radica tells the story of three generations: grandfather Rocco, father Antonio and now Giacomo Radica. The estate has bottled its own wines since 2009, with a clear focus on the Tullum rules – then still a DOP, officially DOCG since 4 July 2019. This classification crowns a terroir with more than a thousand years of winegrowing tradition in Tollo, in the province of Chieti, between the Adriatic Sea and the foothills of the Majella.
Terroir
The vines grow at 190 to 250 metres above sea level, on medium-textured, slightly calcareous, shallow soil with a good proportion of stones, facing south to south-east. The vines are at least 20 years old, traditionally trained on the Abruzzo pergola, with a reduced yield of 90 quintals per hectare. The grapes are picked by hand in the second week of October.
Vinification
Maceration on the skins lasts at least 30 days at controlled temperature in stainless-steel tanks, followed by full malolactic fermentation. After racking, the wine matures in small French oak barriques before a long further maturation in steel tanks.
Tasting note
Impenetrable, dark ruby red with violet highlights. Deep aromas of macerated flowers, preserved sour cherry, liquorice, clove and undergrowth on the finish. Powerful and energetic on the palate, dense and juicy, with a firm, well-judged tannin structure and fruity freshness that nicely balances the alcoholic warmth.
At the table
Structured main courses, red meat and braised dishes; also with hearty cooked vegetable specialities.
- One of Italy's smallest DOCG appellations: Tullum is tightly delimited and little known – a real insider's tip.
- Three generations of family tradition: From grandfather Rocco to Giacomo Radica.
- Limited production: Only a few thousand bottles – and in some years, because of the weather, none at all.
- Single-varietal Montepulciano: A clear, unadulterated expression of the grape from a protected terroir.
