2019 Château Léoville Las Cases - Saint-Julien - 2ème Cru Classé
Description:
The 2019 Léoville Las Cases is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 11% Merlot. Harvesting began early for the Merlot on September 18th, with the Cabernets picked in October, finishing on October 8th. The IPT (tannin measurement) is 80 - like in 2018. The alcohol content is 14.02% (lower than 2018), but it seems slightly lower than this percentage, probably because the pH this year is slightly lower at 3.67. It matures in French oak barrels, 90% new.
Aroma and Taste:
The 2019 Léoville Las Cases is a brilliant young wine that will delight Bordeaux purists. In the glass, it reveals aromas of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper, and pencil shavings. It is full-bodied, multi-layered, and tightly wound, with a deep core of fruit, vibrant acidity, and an abundance of rich, powdery tannins. Concentrated and serious, much like its immediate neighbor Château Latour, it will likely prove to be one of the most long-lived - and greatest - wines of the vintage. The color is opaque purple-black.
