1982 was an outstanding year in which quality went hand in hand with quantity. The 1982 Cheval Blanc is rich and full. It is one of the best vintages of the second half of the 20th century. The first part of the growing season was mild and moderately wet. April, however, was particularly dry. Characteristic of the vintage are the hot month of July and the drought from August 10 to September 20. After September 10, there was a heatwave that favored ripening.
Aroma and Taste:
The color is of medium intensity and shows a beautiful dark tile color at the edges, revealing the wine's age. The nose is characterized by power, concentration, and complexity. Truffle, then crème caramel, candied orange, and plums follow elegantly, accompanied by a light smoky note. When swirled, the nose develops roasted notes, coffee, cocoa, and chocolate on a spicy background with hints of cinnamon and praline. On the palate, the attack is soft, fresh, and supple at the same time. The wine is highly concentrated, muscular, yet graceful and fluid without any heaviness. The velvety tannins carry this racy wine over aromas of cedar, blackcurrant, raspberry jam, and blackberry, as well as many other flavors, leading to a very long finish. A centennial wine that is always extravagantly young.
Aging:
The 1982 Cheval Blanc Saint-Émilion Grand Cru was aged in 100% new oak barrels.
The vintage contains Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes.
