1983 was a rainy year, characterized by an exceptional late season. The wines are aromatic, of great intensity, and have a certain sweetness when tasted. The year was generally very wet, with abundant rainfall particularly in April, May, and August. Temperatures were low in May and very high in August. The climatic year was saved by a very beautiful September and a dry start to October with exceptionally high temperatures.
Aroma and Taste:
The color is of medium intensity and has a brick-red color tending towards orange. The nose is very powerful and very intense with initial impressions of musk, followed by notes of forest floor and humus. Swirling the wine reveals sweet impressions with notes of acacia blossoms and beeswax. The attack is voluminous, full of roundness and alcohol, giving the impression of a certain sweetness. It is a gentle wine with notes of cashews and anise on the finish. The very concentrated palate is dominated by blackcurrant aromas. Of medium length, the finish is somewhat tart and tannic, but very intense. The 1983 Cheval Blanc was produced in a demanding vintage and is a great success that has now reached its peak and will not gain anything from further aging.
Aging:
The 1983 Cheval Blanc Saint-Émilion Grand Cru was aged in 100% new oak barrels.
The vintage contains Cabernet Franc, Merlot grapes
