2017 Les Coteaux Rouge - Mas Belles Eaux - AOP Languedoc
A classic Languedoc blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan - the traditional grape combination of the AOP Languedoc appellation, here dominated by Syrah. As a 2017, the wine has already left its initial fruit-driven stage behind and now shows the development towards more spice and depth typical of mature southern French cuvées.
Site and vinification
Mas Belles Eaux lies in Caux, not far from Pézenas, in the heart of the appellation. The name refers to the many springs that rise on the estate and flow into the river Peyne. The 90 hectares of vineyards lie on a geologically diverse terroir of Villafranchian pebbles, red clay and alluvial soils. The harvest is plot by plot, with each plot picked and vinified separately. Fermentation is preceded by a cold maceration that favours depth of colour and fruit extraction without sacrificing freshness. The wine is aged in tank and barrique.
Tasting note
Strong, dense red. On the nose, sour cherry and red fruit, accompanied by pepper and wild herbs, with slightly smoky nuances. Rich and voluminous on the palate, with noticeable structure that the fruit nevertheless keeps lively.
Drinking window: Originally recommended by the domaine for 2019–2023; now at or slightly beyond the end of its classic drinking window – still of interest to lovers of mature, spice-driven styles.
At the table: Game birds, hearty meat dishes on the bone, grilled or braised red meat; also with strong cheese.
