The 2018 Valbuena 5º is a vertical, vibrant, crystalline expression, full of nuances, with an alluring and smooth texture.
Color: Valbuena 5° has a deep, ruby-red sparkling color and a classic, yet complex aroma of dried fruits, ripe blackberries, blossoms, subtle balsamic notes of frankincense and Asian spices, delicate wood and roasting aromas (cedar, cigar box, pencil lead) and fine mineral nuances that lend the bouquet an elegant linearity with a hint of austerity.
- Taste: Immediately opulent, intense, and full-bodied on the palate, becoming softer and more delicate as it develops, yet clearly structured and long. A perfect representative of the typical linearity of Ribera del Duero! Feel free to give Valbuena 5° a little time to unfold even more softly and harmoniously.
- Grape variety: Malbec, Merlot, Tempranillo
- Wine Description: Valbuena 5º is the purest expression of Vega Sicilia's red wine. It is aged for five years in barrel and bottle, hence the name Valbuena 5º. A fresher, Atlantic-influenced, somewhat more productive vintage. We had to be stricter in our selection, but these vintages have given the wines a touch of dynamism and verticality, which is wonderful. In 2018, we were able to reduce the extraction a bit more, and we increased the influence of wood in the first year of aging, especially our American oak (5%). In the second year of aging, the vat worked on the complexity of the nuances and, above all, the elegance of the texture.

Wine note:
VITICULTURAL CYCLE 2018. The preceding cycle ended with below-average minimum temperatures and widespread frosts from early November. Winter temperatures were lower than normal but rose above average in early April, leading to suitable budbreak in the second half of the month. Summer temperatures were normal for the season, and in conjunction with ample water reserves in the soil and good light conditions, the vineyard developed excellently, with a faster vine cycle. Stormy periods with abundant rainfall in early September led to a delay in harvesting. -
Serving suggestion:
With roasted and braised lamb and beef, seasoned Mediterranean or oriental style, with grilled eggplants and yellow peppers, with ragouts and spicy stews (also meatless) with white beans, lentils or pumpkin.
