2022 Crozes-Hermitage "Les Chaflans" - Domaine Les Alexandrins - Rhône, France
Domaine Les Alexandrins was born of a partnership between three Rhône winemakers who pooled their Syrah expertise: Nicolas Jaboulet, the sixth generation of a winemaking family based in Tain l'Hermitage since 1834; Guillaume Sorrel, son of Marc Sorrel of Domaine Sorrel in Hermitage; and Alexandre Caso, a terroir specialist of the northern Rhône Valley. Their shared goal: wines that stay true to the terroir of the northern Rhône while showing a modern, accessible elegance.
Terroir and origin of the site
Les Chaflans is a plot-by-plot selection of the estate's best Syrah vines – exclusively from 30- to 40-year-old vines planted on the left bank of the Rhône between the Hermitage and Saint-Joseph appellations. The soil of granite and clay-limestone, covered with rounded pebbles (galets roulés), gives the wine complexity and depth. The grapes are picked by hand at optimum ripeness.
Vinification
After traditional vinification with 70% destemmed fruit and a three-day cold maceration, alternating punching down (pigeage) and pumping over (remontage) ensure a gentle extraction of aromas and tannins. The wine is then aged for several months in large French oak casks, which gives it fine, spicy oak notes and a tannin structure that is already well integrated in its youth.
Tasting note
Deep, captivating black-red with a radiant sheen. An intense bouquet of ripe dark fruit, spice and subtle vanilla and toasty notes, underpinned by violets. Rich and velvety on the palate, with present but silky tannins; the finish is long and lingering, carried by lovely freshness.
Drinking window: 2024 to 2029, with an overall ageing potential of 15 to 18 years.
Rating: 95 points (Tannico).
At the table: Provençal braised dishes such as daube, grilled or braised beef, aged cheese and spicy dishes.
