Domaine Belleville was founded in Rully, in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, at the beginning of the 20th century and is today one of the largest estates in the appellation by area. The estate covers around 22 hectares, spread from the Côte Chalonnaise to the Côte de Nuits, and belongs to the Dumont family, who also run Château de Messey in the Mâconnais and the Manoir Murisaltien in the Côte-d'Or. The team is advised by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, one of Burgundy's most respected winemakers – his influence shows in the precision and clarity that distinguish the house's wines.
The name and the terroir
"La Perche" refers to an old agricultural measure of area, one hundredth of an acre, and also recalls a forest that once surrounded the plot. The vineyard lies on clay-limestone soil at the foot of the slope, where the Chardonnay vines, around 30 years old, have found ideal growing conditions.
Vinification
The grapes are pressed gently and the must is left to settle for 12 to 24 hours before a slow, complete alcoholic fermentation. A good third of the wine is then aged for twelve months in barriques, the rest in stainless-steel tanks. This interplay produces a subtle, well-integrated oak note without the fruit or structure of the wine taking a back seat.
Tasting note
Lovely pale gold, clear and brilliant. An open, spicy nose with aromas of white flowers and citrus, complemented by fine notes of almond and minerals and a hint of ripe yellow fruit. Full yet elegant on the palate, with pronounced minerality, citrus and exotic fruit notes, fine acidity and a very long, harmonious finish.
Award An earlier vintage (2014) was awarded two stars ("remarkable wine") and a "Coup de Cœur" by the Guide Hachette des Vins – proof of the consistently high quality of this cuvée across vintages.
At the table Oily fish (salmon, tuna), seafood, aged hard cheese and washed-rind cheese, pan-fried forest mushrooms; also a surprisingly good match for Asian-inspired noodle and curry dishes.
