Botucal Distillery Collection No. 1: The Technological Soul of Venezuelan Rum

The Botucal Distillery Collection No. 1 (internationally known as Diplomático Distillery Collection No. 1 Batch Kettle Rum) is an exceptional product in the portfolio of Destilerías Unidas S.A. (DUSA). While many premium blends aim to create a consistent harmony of different distillation styles, the Distillery Collection is an invitation for connoisseurs to experience the isolated DNA of a specific process. The No. 1 is all about the Batch Kettle, a semi-continuous distillation system that originated in Canada and was brought to Venezuela in 1959.

Venezuela holds a special position in the world of rum. As one of the few countries with a protected designation of origin (DOC Ron de Venezuela), its production is subject to the strictest controls. Rum can only be called such if it has matured for at least two years in oak barrels and contains no unnatural additives. Botucal represents a terroir at the foot of the Andes, characterized by fertile soils and a climate that offers a perfect balance between tropical heat and nocturnal cooling.

Section 1: Sensory & Taste Profile – Power Meets Precision

Appearance: A Deep Amber Glow

In the glass, the Distillery Collection No. 1 reveals a rich, brilliant amber. When swirled, it shows considerable viscosity; the streaks (legs) flow slowly and oilily down the rim of the glass, indicating the concentration of the distillate and the alcohol content of 47 % vol.

Nose: Complexity of Molasses

The nosing begins with an intense but elegant sweetness. One clearly smells the high-quality molasses that served as the raw material here. Aromas of dark caramel, vanilla pods, and ripe red fruits like cherries and plums unfold. This fruitiness is underpinned by a fine leather note and a hint of toasted oak, which gives the rum depth without dominating it.

Mouthfeel: Oily Heaviness and Texture

On the palate, this rum displays an impressive stature. The 47% vol is excellently integrated; it conveys the aromas with power without causing an unpleasant burning sensation. The mouthfeel is oily, almost creamy, coating the entire mouth. The woody spice of the ex-bourbon casks sovereignly balances the natural sweetness of the molasses.

Taste: The Development on the Palate

The first sip confirms the nose but adds a spicy dimension. Alongside the caramel and vanilla notes, nuances of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and a hint of tropical spice (nutmeg, clove) emerge. It is a very structured development – from sweet fruitiness to a drier, complex woody spice.

Finish: A Lingering Finale

The finish is exceptionally long and warming. Instead of a sticky residual sweetness, a dry, noble oak note remains, paired with the aroma of dried fruits and a final memory of toasted tobacco. A truly "mature" rum that shows Botucal can do much more than just be sweet.

Section 2: Raw Material & Fermentation – The Foundation of Taste

The Base: Molasses-Honey

For the No. 1 of the Distillery Collection, Botucal uses high-quality molasses and so-called "Sugar Cane Honey," a thickened juice from the first pressing. This raw material is richer in fermentable sugars than industrial residual molasses and ensures the characteristic richness of Venezuelan rums.

Fermentation: Targeted Flavor Development

DUSA relies on controlled fermentation. For heavy distillates, such as those produced in the Batch Kettle, special yeast strains are used, requiring a fermentation period of about 48 hours. During this time, the yeasts not only convert sugar into alcohol but also produce the esters crucial for the Batch Kettle style, which are later responsible for the fruity profile.

Terroir: The Andes Connection

The sugarcane grows in the immediate vicinity of the distillery in La Miel. The mineral-rich soil and high humidity promote growth, while the cooler nights at the foot of the Andes favor the concentration of flavors in the plant. This specific microclimate is a decisive factor for the DOC certification.

Section 3: Distillation & The Art of Aging

The Batch Kettle Process

The special feature of No. 1 is the Batch Kettle System. It can be imagined as a hybrid form between a Pot Still (copper pot) and a Column Still. It is a discontinuous system that allows for precise separation of heads and tails. The result is a distillate that possesses the heaviness and character of a Pot Still but exhibits the purity and elegance of column distillation.

Aging: Tropical Aging

Aging takes place exclusively in American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon. Venezuela is subject to Tropical Aging. Due to the heat, rum ages up to three times faster than whisky in Scotland. The "Angel's Share" (the amount that evaporates annually) often exceeds 8% here. This leads to a rapid extraction of vanillin and tannins from the wood, which gives Botucal No. 1 its golden-brown color and deep aroma.

Section 4: Transparency & Reviews

Sugar Content and Regulation

According to EU Regulation 2019/787, rum has been allowed to contain a maximum of 20 grams of sugar per liter since 2021. Botucal has significantly reduced its dosage (finishing with sugar) in recent years. The Distillery Collection No. 1 is well below this limit and presents itself as an honest, distillate-focused product that does not rely on massive sweetening.

Awards & Reviews

The Botucal Distillery Collection No. 1 enjoys a high reputation in the professional world:

  • San Francisco World Spirits Competition: Regular gold and silver placements for the series (sfspiritscomp.com).

  • Rum Ratings: One of Botucal's highest-rated series with average scores of 8/10 points (rumratings.com).

  • German Rum Festival: The Distillery Collection is often highlighted as a prime example of modern Venezuelan distilling art (rum-festival.de).

Section 5: Perfect Serve – From Neat to Old Fashioned

Neat Enjoyment

To fully appreciate the 47% vol and the complex Batch Kettle aromas, we recommend a Glencairn glass or a small snifter. The glass perfectly concentrates the aromas for the nose. After pouring, let the rum breathe for about 5 minutes – the air helps to reduce alcoholic sharpness and release the fruity notes.

Cocktails

Although it's almost too good to mix, it's the ideal base for a Rum Old Fashioned.

  • 6 cl Botucal No. 1

  • 1 bar spoon cane sugar syrup

  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

  • Orange zest

The strength of the 47% vol ensures that the rum remains present in the cocktail and is not diluted.

Food Pairing

Pair this rum with a dark chocolate (at least 75% cocoa content) or a medium-bodied cigar (e.g., from Nicaragua). Dried figs or dates also harmonize excellently with the molasses sweetness.
