This Blanc de Blancs comes from selected hillside plots of the "La Côte" vineyard in Avize – in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, one of the most prestigious terroirs for Chardonnay anywhere. The chalky soils give the wine its characteristic chalky minerality and endless freshness.
The 2019 vintage
An exceptional year of sunshine and changeable, at times extreme weather. Despite these challenges the 2019 wines combined quality, ripeness and concentration in a rare way – a vintage Roederer itself calls "exceptional" and compares with the finesse of great white Burgundy.
Vinification
28% of the base wine was fermented in oak, the rest in steel tanks, entirely without malolactic fermentation. The wine then spent five years on its lees, followed by at least six months' rest after disgorgement to reach perfect maturity. The dosage is 7 g/l.
Tasting note
Deep yellow with radiant highlights and a fine, even mousse. On the nose, Chardonnay at its best: powdered chalk, candied lemon, white flowers (jasmine), harvest notes and lightly toasted almonds. On the palate, a round, fruity attack gives way to chalky minerality – the signature of the Côte des Blancs' limestone soils. Fresh and dynamic, with a balanced finish in which mineral tension and fruit sweetness come together perfectly.
Rating 95 points (Jeb Dunnuck); 94 points (Wine-Searcher average of the trade press).
At the table Ideal as an aperitif or with fine dishes such as shellfish, fine fish or fresh goat's cheese.
