In a vintage when frost and rot brought most Champagne growers to their knees, Roederer made only two vintage champagnes - this rosé is one of them.
Tasting note
Delicate pink with copper highlights and a fine, persistent perlage. Wild strawberry and raspberry meet a fresh blood-orange note, joined as the wine breathes by delicate hints of chocolate and cedar. Velvety and silky on the palate, with a long, mineral finish and a subtle salty, iodine note.
Rating
93 points (Wine Spectator, James Suckling, The Wine Independent).
At the table
As an elegant aperitif or with fine shellfish dishes.
Origin and terroir
The rosé comes 100% from the house's own historic family vineyards in Cumières and Chouilly. Roederer invested specifically in Cumières, one of the earliest-ripening sites in Champagne, whose steep, south-facing clay-limestone slopes offer ideal ripening conditions. In 2017 the Pinot Noir grapes had to be picked deliberately early to escape rot – and the result was a rosé of rare tension and vitality instead of the feared weakness of the vintage.
Vinification
A long, gentle maceration of the Pinot Noir grapes, complemented by Chardonnay juice from Chouilly with which it is co-fermented. Around 29% of the base wines matured in oak, and 24% went through malolactic fermentation. Dosage: 8 g/l.
The house behind it
Louis Roederer, family-owned without interruption since 1833, is one of the last great independent champagne houses – also known for the legendary prestige cuvée Cristal, once created for the Russian tsars.
