Pitters was founded in 1920 and has been devoted exclusively to port production from the traditional grape varieties of the Douro Valley ever since.
The house now belongs to The Fladgate Partnership - one of the most renowned groups in port - and sources its grapes from the group's high-quality sites in the Douro. The classic varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are used, some of them still trodden by foot in stone troughs (lagares) in the traditional way.
Vinification
As a tawny, this port matures in small wooden casks holding about 630 litres. During cask ageing the wine gradually loses the deep ruby red of its youth and takes on the characteristic amber "tawny" hue; at the same time it becomes increasingly supple and mellow, while its aromas gain richness and complexity. Before bottling, the casks are blended to ensure balance and harmony.
Tasting note
Amber with reddish-brown highlights. On the nose, ripe fruit with hints of raisin, underpinned by notes of dried fruit and a nutty complexity that develops with increasing cask age. Full-bodied and harmonious on the palate, with a soft structure and no cloying sweetness.
At the table: One of the most versatile ports of all: an elegant end to any meal, excellent with aged cheese and with chocolate- or fruit-based desserts.
Pro tip: in many countries Pitters Tawny is also popular lightly chilled as an aperitif.
