Sandeman Porto Ruby – the powerful icon of the Douro Valley

The Sandeman Porto Ruby is a timeless classic and the epitome of the lively fruit and intensity of a traditional ruby port. Since 1790 the house of Sandeman, with the mysterious "Don" on its label, has stood for the highest quality and consistency. This ruby impresses with its youthful energy and impressive depth of colour. With a robust alcohol content of 19.5% vol. it balances the natural sweetness of the grapes with a robust structure. Anyone looking to buy an authentic port that brings the fiery fruit of the Douro Valley into the glass unadulterated will find a reliable favourite for any occasion in Sandeman Ruby.

The philosophy: tradition in the shadow of the Don

The making of Sandeman Ruby follows a legacy of more than 200 years of oenological expertise. The aim is to create a wine that keeps the freshness of the harvest while developing the depth a ruby port needs. In accordance with EU Regulation 1169/2011 (FIC) this product offers full transparency. Sandeman is known for keeping the perfect balance between historic craft and modern precision in the cellar, which makes this Porto Ruby one of Portugal's most widely recognised ambassadors.

Sensory analysis

Tasting Sandeman Porto Ruby reveals a profile that impresses with concentration, warmth and clearly defined red fruit.

  • Colour: In the glass the port shows a deep, brilliant ruby red, shading into bright purple highlights at the rim.

  • Aromas (nose): The nose is dominated by a very intense, clean bouquet:

    • Fruit: Powerful notes of ripe cherries, strawberry jam and a hint of dark plums.

    • Spice: Subtle hints of dark chocolate and a trace of black olives.

    • Depth: A fine, warm earthiness that gives the wine complexity.

  • Structure & mouthfeel: On the palate the ruby is full-bodied and substantial. The texture is velvety-soft, embedding the sweetness harmoniously in the body.

  • Balance: The robust 19.5% vol. is superbly integrated and supports the structure, while the ripe fruit fills the mouth.

  • Finish: The finish is long and fruit-driven and ends on a warm, spicy fruit note.

Origin & terroir

The grapes for this port come from the steep terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world.

Soil structure and microclimate

The vines grow on the region's characteristic schist soils (xisto). This hard subsoil forces the vines to root deeply and gives the grapes their concentrated minerality and colour. The extreme climate, with very hot summers, ensures optimal ripeness and the high sugar content essential for making port.

Viticultural philosophy

Sandeman works closely with the region's growers to ensure that only first-class grapes of classic varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz or Touriga Franca are used. The selection aims at maximum extraction of colour and primary aromas.

Vinification & ageing

Sandeman Ruby combines traditional winemaking with targeted maturation.

  • Fermentation & fortification: After a short, intense fermentation, the process is stopped by adding high-quality grape spirit. This preserves the grapes' natural residual sweetness and raises the alcohol content to the level of a liqueur wine.

  • Ageing: The wine matures in large casks made of oak, to preserve its youthful colour and fresh fruit without too much contact with oxygen.

  • Blending: The final blend is assembled from different vintages, to guarantee Sandeman's consistent flavour profile year after year.

Food pairing & serving

Sandeman Porto Ruby is a classic digestif, but also convinces as a partner for food.

  • Suggested dishes: An ideal partner for dark chocolate desserts, forest-berry tart or strong blue cheese (e.g. Stilton).

  • Something different: Served lightly chilled, it goes excellently with dried figs and walnuts.

  • Serving temperature: Best served at 14–16 °C.

  • Storage: Once opened, this ruby port stays fresh for about 3–4 weeks in a cool place.
